Our island was known by many names. To the Greeks it was Taprobane, it was also known as Tambapanni, the Arabs called us Serendib, the Portuguese called us Ceilao, the Dutch referred to us as Ceylan which became Ceylon under the British though the nation was ceded as Sihale in 1815 to the British. Eventually, Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972.
The greatness of our island was such that we were an indispensable port. Our kings built magnificent ships for foreign kings. Our kings traded with numerous empires. When eventually at the turn of the 15th century, the Portuguese, Dutch & British set sail for trade, they also came with the sword & cross.
We have had many trysts with invaders – 17 failed attempts made by South Indian rulers, while each of the 3 colonial invaders succeeded only due to the treachery of those who ruled the island. Our people were proud & defended their nation, sacrificing their lives to do so.
Our rulers ruled following the principles of Buddha and righteous rule which is how the civilization was build & is the foundation stone of the culture & values that exist to this day. The cradle of Theravada Buddhism is Sri Lanka & continues to be as well.
